Working with Moss

How do I glue moss to a wall?
Use an MDF panel or panels. Apply a layer of glue to the desired hard surface and place it horizontally beforehand. Tear or cut the moss to the desired thickness. Apply the pieces of moss starting from one corner and continue working outward until the entire surface is covered. Finally, place a heavy weight on the covered panel to press the moss firmly into the glue and let it dry overnight. Once the glue has dried, you can position the panel(s) vertically.

How much moss do I need per m²?
The required amount of moss per square meter can be found with the respective products online.

Which glue can I use?
Use carpet adhesive or tile adhesive; both types of glue work well in combination with moss. You can also choose to staple the moss if you prefer not to use glue.

Moss Durability

Is the moss alive?
The moss is not dormant (although many websites claim it is still alive). It is always fully dried first and is therefore no longer living.

How is the moss treated?
The (grey) moss is dipped in a solution containing (usually green) colorants. This can be glycerin, but glycerin is highly flammable. That is why we choose a salt solution.

Is the moss fire-retardant?
The salt solution is naturally fire-retardant. If you hold a lighter under the moss, you will see that the moss extinguishes immediately.

Does the moss remain soft and natural to the touch?
The salt solution (or glycerin, as used by some colleagues) is only used to restore the moss’s flexibility. As a result, it feels “fresh” and soft. The colorant is water-based, so the moss will remain slightly moist. If the moss dries out, it may crumble. This is often due to insufficient humidity levels.

If the moss is still moist or appears moist, you can process it as usual and it will continue drying in the air. The moss will always remain slightly moist (and therefore soft) and may release some color. It can be made slightly drier by gently dabbing it with paper towels.
