Peony – elegant and colourful border plant for garden and bouquets

The peony (Paeonia) is a much-loved perennial garden plant with lush, often fragrant flowers in a wide range of colours such as pink, red, white, and yellow. With its large, graceful blooms, the peony has been a symbol of beauty, love, and prosperity in gardens and floral design for centuries.

Unique beauty and variety

Peonies are renowned for their large, often richly double flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer. The blooms can range from just a few centimetres to over 25 cm in diameter and vary from single to fully double forms, creating a rich and textured appearance.

Gardeners distinguish several types of peonies:

  • Herbaceous peonies – die back in winter and bloom abundantly in spring and early summer

  • Tree peonies – woody shrubs with large flowers and an exceptionally long lifespan

  • Itoh peonies – hybrid peonies with strong stems and a long flowering period

Location and care

Peonies are robust perennials that thrive best in a sunny to partially shaded position with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. They prefer fertile, well-drained soil and do not tolerate waterlogged conditions, as excess moisture can lead to root rot.
